Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed willingness to consider Slovakia as a venue for potential peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This announcement follows discussions with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during his recent visit to Moscow.

During a press briefing, President Putin stated, “We do not oppose this because, from our point of view, Slovakia adopts a neutral position that is acceptable to us.” Prime Minister Fico proposed his country as a platform for peace talks, emphasizing Slovakia’s commitment to facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed its readiness to host such negotiations, reiterating its dedication to a non-military solution and willingness to contribute to peace efforts.

However, this proposal has sparked significant debate within Slovakia. Michal Simecka, leader of the largest opposition party, criticized the idea as “absurd” and expressed concerns over the nation’s foreign policy being communicated by external parties. He also labeled President Putin a “criminal.”

Prime Minister Fico’s visit to Moscow is particularly noteworthy, as it marks a rare instance of a European Union leader engaging directly with the Kremlin since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The discussions also encompassed the future of Russian natural gas deliveries to Slovakia, especially in light of Ukraine’s announcement that it will not renew the gas transit agreement set to expire soon.

Internationally, President Putin’s openness to peace talks in Slovakia has elicited varied reactions. While some view it as a positive step towards de-escalation, others remain skeptical, questioning Russia’s commitment to a genuine peace process.

Ukrainian authorities have yet to officially respond to the proposal. Previously, President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized that any peace negotiations must be predicated on the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied territories and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
