Putin To Visit Saudi Arabia, UAE Wednesday: Kremlin

By Thabo Mosia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has affirmed that the decision to use North Korean troops in Russia’s operations is within Russia’s sovereignty, as tensions escalate in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. This statement comes amid reports that North Korea has sent around 3,000 soldiers to Russia, with potential plans to deploy them in combat roles in Ukraine. U.S. intelligence confirmed these developments, suggesting the presence of North Korean forces in Russia’s Kursk region, close to the Ukraine border.

Putin’s comments reflect a bold stance as Russia continues to face pressure from NATO-aligned nations supporting Ukraine. The Russian president stated that if Ukraine seeks security guarantees through NATO, Russia is equally entitled to take steps it deems necessary for its own security, which may include deploying allied forces from North Korea. This development has raised international concern, with the U.S., Japan, and South Korea calling for Russia and North Korea to halt any actions that might exacerbate the conflict and destabilize regional security   .

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called the deployment of North Korean troops a “clear escalation,” urging a strong response from the international community. Meanwhile, North Korea has dismissed these reports, describing them as attempts to damage its international image. However, intelligence from multiple sources continues to suggest that North Korean forces are preparing for potential frontline deployment, marking a significant shift in the dynamics of the Ukraine conflict and expanding its geopolitical implications .

The unfolding situation highlights the increasing complexities in the conflict, with global leaders watching closely as the involvement of foreign troops could lead to new levels of international intervention and sanctions.
