Premier Soccer League (PSL)
By Sello Masilo
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has suspended all Royal AM fixtures, including their upcoming match against Orlando Pirates, until further notice due to the club’s ongoing financial challenges. This decision follows Royal AM’s failure to provide the necessary guarantees to the PSL to fulfil their match commitments in “a compliant fashion.”
Financial Woes and SARS Intervention
Royal AM is currently under curatorship by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) after the club’s president, Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize, allegedly accrued a tax debt of approximately R40 million. In November 2024, SARS officials conducted raids on properties linked to Mkhize, seizing assets including luxury vehicles and properties, to recover the outstanding amount.
Impact on Club Operations
The financial difficulties have significantly impacted Royal AM’s operations. Players and staff did not receive their December 2024 salaries, leading to internal unrest and a subsequent player strike. This unrest resulted in the postponement of their Betway Premiership fixture against Chippa United, initially scheduled for 11 January 2025.
PSL’s Response and Fixture Suspensions
The PSL sought assurances from Royal AM that they could meet their future fixture commitments. Despite promises from the club to provide a letter confirming the resolution of financial issues, no such document was delivered. Consequently, the PSL announced the suspension of all Royal AM fixtures, including the anticipated match against Orlando Pirates at Harry Gwala Stadium. The Executive Committee is scheduled to meet again on 24 January 2025 to allow Royal AM to make representations regarding this matter.
FIFA Transfer Ban and Additional Debts
Compounding the club’s challenges, Royal AM is under a FIFA-imposed transfer ban due to unpaid debts totalling nearly R15 million owed to former players Ricardo Nascimento and Samir Nurkovic. The club’s failure to settle these amounts has restricted their ability to sign new players, further destabilising the team’s performance and morale.
Club’s Commitment to Resolution
In a statement released earlier this month, Shauwn Mkhize expressed regret over the situation and assured stakeholders that the club is “working diligently with the curator to secure the necessary permissions to release funds for salary payments.” She reaffirmed the club’s commitment to resolving the issues and prioritising employee well-being, though no specific timeline was provided for a return to normal operations.
PSL’s Stance and Future Implications
PSL acting CEO Mato Madlala stated that the league is giving the Royal AM matter its full attention but refrained from commenting on specific actions being considered. The situation has raised concerns about the club’s long-term viability and the potential impact on the league’s integrity. The PSL’s Executive Committee’s upcoming meeting is expected to shed more light on the future of Royal AM within the South African football landscape.
