PSL Mourns Sudden Passing of Former Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Calls for Moment of Silence in Weekend Fixtures
The Premier Soccer League has joined the nation in grieving the unexpected death of Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France and a former minister who played a key role in shaping the country’s sports landscape. His passing on 29 September 2025 in Paris has left many in shock, sparking tributes from across the political and sporting worlds. As investigations continue into the circumstances around his death, the league’s gesture highlights his lasting impact on football and beyond.
Mthethwa, who served in various high-profile government positions, was remembered for his dedication to promoting arts, culture, and sports during tough times. His death comes amid broader reflections on public figures’ vulnerabilities abroad, with calls for better protections for diplomats. The Premier Soccer League’s response adds to a wave of condolences, ensuring his memory is honoured on the pitch this weekend.
Nathi Mthethwa’s Life and Political Journey
Born on 23 January 1967 in Clermont, KwaZulu-Natal, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa rose through the ranks of the African National Congress to become a prominent leader. He entered Parliament in 2002, chairing the Minerals and Energy Portfolio Committee before taking on the role of chief whip in 2008.
His ministerial career began as Minister of Safety and Security, later renamed Minister of Police, from 2008 to 2014. He then moved to Arts and Culture from 2014 to 2019, adding Sports to his portfolio until 2023. In this role, he pushed for greater access to sports and cultural activities, especially for young people in underserved areas.
In December 2023, he was appointed as South Africa’s ambassador to France, where he worked to strengthen ties between the two nations. His time in Paris focused on diplomatic relations, but he remained vocal on global issues, including support for causes like Palestine’s struggle for justice.
Mthethwa also sat on the board for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee, helping to deliver one of South Africa’s proudest moments on the world stage. His efforts ensured the tournament ran smoothly, boosting the nation’s image and economy.
Circumstances Surrounding His Untimely Death
Mthethwa was found dead outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris, a high-rise in the west of the city. Reports indicate he may have fallen from the 22nd floor of his room, where a sealed window appeared to have been forced open. He had been reported missing the day before, prompting a search.
French prosecutors are leading the probe, with no clear signs of foul play noted so far. South African officials have expressed sadness while awaiting more details from the investigation. The exact cause remains under review, but the incident has raised questions about safety for diplomats abroad.
At 58 years old, his sudden passing has led to speculation and concern. Some have linked it to his outspoken views on international matters, though nothing has been confirmed. The African National Congress headquarters held a meeting soon after, reflecting on his contributions amid the grief.
PSL’s Heartfelt Tribute and Mark of Respect
The Premier Soccer League released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Mthethwa’s death. They extended heartfelt condolences to his family during this tough period.
As a mark of respect, a moment of silence will be observed in his honour at this week’s Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout, Motsepe Foundation Championship, and DStv Diski Challenge fixtures.
May his soul repose peacefully.
This gesture recognises his work as former Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, where he championed initiatives to grow football and other sports. His support for local talent and events left a mark on the league’s development.
His Legacy in South African Sports and Culture
Mthethwa’s time as minister saw key advances in sports. He backed the boycott of certain international events tied to political issues, standing firm on principles of justice. Under his watch, funding flowed to grassroots programmes, helping nurture future stars.
He also helped integrate sports with cultural heritage, promoting unity through events like the World Cup. His policies aimed to make sports accessible to all, breaking down barriers in a divided society.
Beyond government, he was seen as a steadfast advocate for dignity and self-determination in global affairs. Groups like Africa Palestine have remembered him for withdrawing support from contests in disputed areas and halting related activities in South Africa.
His board role in the 2010 World Cup ensured the event showcased the nation’s spirit, drawing millions and boosting tourism. Many credit him with helping put South African football on the map.
