Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza presented Dr. Kaizer Motaung with a R2 million gift during the National Soccer League’s (NSL) Quadrennial General Meeting on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. This event, held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, saw the attendance of representatives from all 32 PSL clubs, encompassing both the Betway Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Celebrating a Football Icon

Dr. Kaizer Motaung, founder and chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, celebrated his 80th birthday on 16 October 2024. His illustrious career began as a player for Orlando Pirates before he ventured to the United States to play for the Atlanta Chiefs. Upon returning to South Africa, he established Kaizer Chiefs in 1970, a club that has since become a cornerstone of South African football. Beyond his club achievements, Motaung co-founded the NSL in 1985, laying the groundwork for the modern PSL established in 1996.

A Gesture of Appreciation

During the meeting, Dr. Khoza, who was re-elected unopposed as PSL chairman, announced the special gift to Motaung. He stated, “I would like to ask the members of the Exco [Executive Committee] to grant me permission to grant Dr. Motaung R2 million to spoil himself.” Khoza further acknowledged Motaung’s unwavering commitment, noting, “Dr. Kaizer Motaung has worked hard for himself. I know the pain and agony you went through to build an institution like Kaizer Chiefs and the NSL. May God bless you.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Dr. Motaung’s contributions extend beyond club management. In 1996, alongside Dr. Khoza, he played a pivotal role in transforming the NSL into the PSL, revolutionising professional soccer in South Africa by attracting significant sponsorships and investments. His leadership was instrumental in South Africa’s successful bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, marking the first time the tournament was held on African soil.
