Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza has announced that the champions of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership will receive a substantial prize of R20 million. This announcement was made during a press conference held at the PSL offices in Parktown on Wednesday, 6 November 2024.

Dr. Khoza stated, “Today we will announce the prize money of the winner only. The winner of the Betway Premiership [will receive] R20m.” This marks a significant increase from previous seasons, reflecting the league’s growth and the enhanced sponsorship deal with Betway.

The detailed breakdown of prize money for the remaining teams will be communicated at a later stage. This approach ensures that all participating clubs are informed of their potential earnings, promoting transparency and competitiveness within the league.

The partnership with Betway, announced earlier this year, is a three-year sponsorship deal worth approximately R900 million. Betway’s CEO, Laurence Michel, described it as “the single biggest investment in South African sport,” underscoring the company’s commitment to the development of football in the country.

This substantial investment is expected to elevate the league’s profile, attract higher-quality talent, and provide better resources for clubs. The increased prize money serves as a significant incentive for teams to perform at their best throughout the season.

In the previous season, Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the champions, earning R15 million for their league victory. With the prize now increased to R20 million, the stakes are higher, promising an even more competitive season ahead.

The PSL’s decision to enhance the prize money aligns with global trends in football, where leagues are increasing financial rewards to boost competitiveness and entertainment value. This move is anticipated to have a positive impact on the development of football in South Africa, providing clubs with additional resources to invest in talent development and infrastructure.
