Paris Saint-Germain delivered a sensational performance in the semi-finals of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday night, thrashing Spanish giants Real Madrid 4-0 at a packed MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to book a historic final date with Chelsea.
Fabian Ruiz starred with a brace, while Ousmane Dembélé and Gonçalo Ramos also found the back of the net in what became a night to forget for Kylian Mbappé and Real Madrid. The French striker started against his former club for the first time since his high-profile move last year but was rendered ineffective as PSG dominated from start to finish.
With 77,542 fans in attendance, many draped in Madrid white, it was the reigning European champions from France who turned the American venue into their playground, scoring three goals in the first half before sealing the rout late on.
Ruiz, Dembélé and Ramos Seal Parisian Masterclass
PSG manager Luis Enrique was full of praise after his side’s commanding performance, saying: “We are in a special season, a special moment, and we deserved to win. We want to make history in our club, and then take some holidays.”
PSG made their intentions clear from the start. Just six minutes into the match, a misplaced defensive effort from Real Madrid gave Dembélé a chance, and though his effort was stopped by Thibaut Courtois, Fabian Ruiz pounced on the rebound to score the opener.
Only three minutes later, chaos in Madrid’s backline saw Antonio Rüdiger miscontrol a simple pass from Jude Bellingham. Dembélé raced through and calmly slotted home to double the lead. The goal was his 35th for club and country since August — a remarkable tally that places him firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation.
PSG’s intensity continued unabated. In the 23rd minute, Achraf Hakimi surged down the right and cut back to Ruiz, who calmly side-stepped Fede Valverde and slotted in his second of the night to make it 3-0.
The third goal followed a swift sequence of possession that saw Madrid unable to touch the ball before it hit the back of their net — a moment that encapsulated the gap between the two sides on the night.
In the dying minutes of the match, substitute Bradley Barcola laid off a clean pass to Gonçalo Ramos, who turned smartly before firing home to complete the humiliation.
Real Madrid in Disarray Under Alonso
While PSG appeared cohesive, aggressive and balanced across the pitch, Real Madrid looked disjointed and overwhelmed. Under new coach Xabi Alonso, the Spanish giants had hoped to make a deep run in the first-ever 32-team Club World Cup. But the 15-time European champions were exposed badly.
“We were not good enough today,” admitted Alonso in his post-match interview. “We are not the first ones to lose to them, but we have a lot of different things to improve.”
Madrid’s defensive frailties were glaring. With Dean Huijsen suspended and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also unavailable, the makeshift backline failed to contain PSG’s dynamic attack. Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, usually Madrid’s brightest lights, were subbed off just after the hour mark — a tactical surrender from Alonso, knowing the match was beyond rescue.
The much-anticipated return of Kylian Mbappé, who missed the group stages due to illness, added further intrigue to the tie. But the Frenchman was largely anonymous on his first start against his former employers, underlining how effectively PSG neutralised Real’s attacking trio.
A Historic Season Beckons for PSG
This victory continues a dream campaign for Paris Saint-Germain, who already lifted the Ligue 1 title and clinched their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy earlier this year. A win against Chelsea in the Club World Cup final on Sunday would crown a season of unprecedented dominance and firmly entrench the Parisians among global football’s elite.
Their path to the final has been equally emphatic. PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in the UEFA Champions League final — the biggest win in European Cup final history — and swept aside Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the Club World Cup quarter-finals before this demolition of Real Madrid.
Despite the suspension of key defender Willian Pacho following a red card in the quarters, Luis Enrique’s side showed no signs of defensive weakness. Lucas Beraldo stepped in seamlessly, and PSG’s high defensive line, combined with their relentless pressing, ensured Real never settled.
Achraf Hakimi, Fabian Ruiz, and Manuel Ugarte ran the midfield, while forwards like Dembélé and substitute Barcola stretched Madrid’s defence all evening.
Chelsea Await in All-European Final
Chelsea, who secured their place in the final with a narrow victory over South American champions Palmeiras, now await PSG in what promises to be a mouth-watering European clash for the Club World Cup crown.
Luis Enrique was measured in his anticipation of the final: “They [Chelsea] did great, they performed the whole competition and now it is time for us to prepare for that. We’re just one step away.”
For Chelsea, the challenge is steep — PSG have scored 13 goals in three Club World Cup matches, conceding just one. With the likes of Ruiz, Dembélé, Ramos, and Hakimi in top form, the French side look every bit the global juggernaut they’ve long aimed to become.
Mbappé’s Return Overshadowed by Parisian Brilliance
In what many had hoped would be the storyline of the night — Mbappé facing his former club — the French forward’s subdued display served only to highlight how far PSG have progressed since his departure. The crowd may have anticipated fireworks from the World Cup winner, but it was PSG who lit up the night.
And perhaps that’s the most powerful message of all. Once defined by Mbappé, Paris Saint-Germain now thrive without him — and with the Club World Cup final looming, they are on the brink of cementing their legacy as the best team on the planet in 2025.
