At the age of 95, Prince Buthelezi breathed his last in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness and paid tribute to Prince Buthelezi, acknowledging his significant contributions to the political and cultural landscape of the nation. As the first Minister of Home Affairs in democratic South Africa, Prince Buthelezi played a crucial role in the transition towards freedom and the establishment of a democratic dispensation.

The President’s heartfelt condolences extended to the Royal Household, who had the privilege of sharing an extended lifetime with the Prince, as well as to the Zulu Nation and the leadership and members of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The President called upon the nation to embrace the Buthelezi clan and offer their support and prayers during this time of mourning.

In the coming days, the government and the family will work together to make the necessary arrangements to mourn and honor the Inkosi of the Buthelezi clan. With a leadership history spanning seven decades, Prince Buthelezi’s influence on the country’s development and history cannot be overstated.

President Ramaphosa assured the nation that a more extensive reflection on Prince Buthelezi’s extraordinary life and diverse contributions will be carried out in due course. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
