Defendant Accused of Fraud and Forgery During 2021 Local Government Elections

Nhlanhla Sizani, 24, made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering. Sizani was issued a summons on December 12, 2023, and is accused of submitting a fraudulent letter with the United Nations insignia during the 2021 Local Government Elections (LGE). The letter requested South African Police Service (SAPS) escort to polling stations, claiming he was a UN Ambassador/Diplomat.

Investigations by the Hawks’ Crime against the State within Serious Organised Crime Investigation revealed that Sizani misrepresented himself and was not an Ambassador/Diplomat. The UN also confirmed that the escort request was not made by them, causing financial loss to the SAPS.

The case has been postponed to January 23, 2024, to allow the accused to obtain legal representation.
