Pretoria High Court Ceases Operations Amid Generator Failure

Pretoria High Court

By Karabo Marifi

On Tuesday, 18 February 2025, the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria temporarily halted its operations due to a power outage affecting the Tshwane Central Business District (CBD). The court’s backup generator also failed, exacerbating the situation. The Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) issued a statement confirming the suspension of activities and apologising for the inconvenience caused.

The City of Tshwane reported that the outage resulted from a 132kV transformer trip at the Boom Street Substation, impacting parts of the CBD and Marabastad. Technicians are currently addressing the fault, but no estimated time for power restoration has been provided.

This incident follows a similar disruption last week when the Johannesburg High Court closed temporarily due to water shortages in the area.

The OCJ has assured that affected parties will be contacted regarding alternative arrangements for matters scheduled for today. Court users and legal practitioners are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates on the situation.

Residents and businesses experiencing power outages are encouraged to report them by contacting the City of Tshwane’s customer care at 012 358 9999 (option 3) or by SMSing the word ‘power’ followed by their account number to 082 612 0333 or 44676.
