President Cyril Ramaphosa, accompanied by President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, is scheduled to visit the site of the devastating bus accident in Limpopo that resulted in the tragic loss of 45 lives. This visit, scheduled for today, underscores the depth of the tragedy that struck on 28 March 2024, when a bus carrying Easter pilgrims from Molepolole in Botswana to Moria in Limpopo veered off the bridge along the Mmamatlakala Pass.

The incident, marking one of the darkest moments in recent memory, saw the untimely death of 45 passengers, with an eight-year-old child emerging as the sole survivor of the harrowing ordeal. The pilgrims were en route to celebrate Easter, making the tragedy even more heart-wrenching for the families involved and their communities.

In a statement released by the Presidency, it was conveyed that the visit by the Heads of State and Government would kick off with a closed briefing by officials in Mokopane. Following this session, the leaders will proceed to the R518, where the accident occurred, bringing their personal respects to the site of the calamity.

“President Ramaphosa conveyed condolences on behalf of the government of South Africa to Botswana following the tragic accident of a bus transporting Easter pilgrims to Moria,” the statement detailed. This gesture of condolence and the subsequent visit serve to underscore the shared sense of loss and grief that has enveloped both nations in the wake of the disaster.

The day’s events will initiate with a closed-door briefing from expert officials at 10:30 am in Mokopane, transitioning to the afternoon when the Presidents will make their way to the scene of the accident at the Mmamatlakale Bridge. This visit not only marks a moment of mourning but also signifies the unity between South Africa and Botswana as they navigate through the aftermath of the incident.
