President Xi Jinping Declines Trump’s Inauguration Invitation

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, despite receiving an invitation. This decision aligns with the longstanding tradition that foreign leaders do not participate in U.S. presidential inaugurations.

The invitation, extended shortly after Trump’s electoral victory, was confirmed by his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, who described it as an effort to foster open dialogue with both allies and competitors. However, the Chinese Embassy in Washington has not provided a response regarding Xi’s attendance.

Experts suggest that Xi’s absence is influenced by political considerations, especially in light of Trump’s proposed tariffs on Chinese imports if Beijing does not address issues such as the flow of fentanyl into the United States. Attending the inauguration could be perceived as politically risky for Xi, given the current tensions between the two nations.

While Xi will not be present, it is anticipated that China will send a senior official to represent the country at the event. This approach allows China to maintain diplomatic engagement without breaching protocol or exposing its leader to potential political risks.
