President Trump Deploys 700 Marines and Thousands of National Guard Troops
By Chris Williams
President Donald Trump has deployed 700 U.S. Marines and thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to ongoing protests sparked by immigration raids, prompting an outcry from California Governor Gavin Newsom and raising significant legal and political concerns.
It began over the weekend when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted raids in Los Angeles, arresting over 100 people. Demonstrations broke out, leading to clashes with police and damage in the downtown area. On Saturday, Trump authorised the mobilisation of 2,000 California National Guard troops under Title 10, bypassing Governor Newsom’s objections . That same day, an additional 300 National Guard personnel were deployed to protect federal officers and buildings .
On Monday, the Pentagon announced that a 700–strong Marine battalion from Camp Pendleton, based at Twentynine Palms, had been “activated” and deployed to Los Angeles to work alongside the National Guard . A senior official confirmed: “Active‑duty US Marines from Camp Pendleton will be deployed to Los Angeles to help protect federal agents and buildings” . This marks one of the most substantial domestic military deployments in decades.
Governor Newsom immediately condemned the move as “deranged” and “dictatorial”, calling for legal action and accusing the administration of sowing chaos . California’s Attorney General joined the lawsuit, arguing that Trump had “trampled” state sovereignty and violated federal law by federalising the National Guard without state consent . City officials and legal experts also warn that this deployment could set a dangerous precedent, undermining democratic principles and eroding the traditional separation of federal and state powers .
According to expert commentary, the deployment raises unprecedented constitutional questions. It’s the first instance since 1965—during the Selma to Montgomery civil rights marches—that a National Guard force has been federalised without state approval . Legal scholars warn that invoking active-duty troops on civilian streets blurs crucial boundaries and may reflect authoritarian tactics .
The protests, now in their fourth day, have remained largely peaceful despite some violence, vandalism, and confrontations . Instances include the shutting of the 101 Freeway and five driverless vehicles set alight . As of Monday, over 70 arrests had been made, with reports of injuries to both protesters and law enforcement officers .
The Pentagon is rushing to establish rules for the Marines’ deployment, unsure of how active-duty troops will operate in this sensitive domestic role . President Trump, defending his decision, has framed the mobilisation as vital for restoring order and protecting federal infrastructure . Yet critics emphasise that the deployment is more than security—a politically charged show of force.
Governor Newsom and city officials fear that integrating military personnel trained for combat into civilian policing escalates the crisis. The contrast between the heavily militarised response and the civil nature of the protests has fuelled widespread alarm. Civil rights groups argue that police tactics should not mirror wartime manoeuvres .
Meanwhile, Trump has signalled his readiness to deploy troops in other U.S. cities if protests spread—raising broader national concerns . Legal experts predict a landmark court battle over the legality of deploying active-duty forces without a state governor’s approval.
On the ground in Los Angeles, law enforcement has set a “tactical alert” and continued to disperse crowds with less‑lethal tactics, aiming to prevent further escalation . Despite tensions, the protests have shown resilience and resolve, with organisers emphasising peaceful protest and legal challenge.
It remains unclear how long the Marines and additional Guard units will remain deployed. The governor’s lawsuit could soon lead to a temporary injunction, depending on judicial intervention . Meanwhile, national attention is focused on whether this effort will defuse or inflame tensions.
