President Cyril Ramaphosa called for a collective effort from citizens, political factions, and civic bodies to ensure the 2024 National and Provincial Elections bolster South Africa’s journey of democratic maturation. Addressing South Africans in his weekly newsletter, the President highlighted the critical nature of the elections scheduled for 29 May, urging for a cooperative spirit to preserve the democratic fabric of the nation.

President Ramaphosa emphasised the responsibility shouldered by all segments of society – from the government to the individual voter – in upholding the sanctity of the electoral process. “It is up to us all, whether as government, political parties, candidates, voters, the media or civil society organisations, to play our part by ensuring that our actions and words inspire faith in our democracy. We must continue to work together to ensure that nothing undermines the integrity of our elections,” he stated.

With the elections marking the seventh of its kind since the advent of democracy three decades ago, the President reminded the nation of the significant sacrifices made to secure the right to vote. His message underscored the importance of conducting the electoral process without succumbing to intimidation or violence.

Highlighting the strengths of the nation’s constitutional framework, President Ramaphosa praised the freedom of political contestation, media liberty, and the impartial judiciary – all underpinned by the vigilant oversight of the Electoral Court and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

As the countdown to the pivotal election day commences, South Africa’s vibrant political landscape reflects a maturing democracy, rich with diverse perspectives and choices for its electorate. The President underlined the essence of embracing differing opinions within the democratic sphere, reaffirming the nation’s confidence in the rule of law to peacefully resolve disputes.

In addressing the engagement of the South African electorate, the President referred to IEC-commissioned research indicating a majority of South Africans, approximately 57%, viewing voting as an indispensable duty – a sentiment shared by 55% of young voters aged 18 to 24. Notably, this demographic comprised over 78% of new voter registrations last year, showcasing the burgeoning political consciousness among the youth.

Despite challenges, President Ramaphosa concluded with a note of optimism for the health of South Africa’s democracy. The ongoing political dynamics and the vibrant electoral discourse, he noted, are hallmarks of a society deeply committed to upholding its constitutional principles of freedom and human rights.
