In a powerful call to action, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged men across South Africa to actively participate in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). This call was made during his Women’s Day address in Pofadder, Northern Cape, where he led by example by signing a pledge alongside men from various sectors of society.
The President’s appeal comes at a critical time when South Africa continues to grapple with alarming rates of GBVF. “President Ramaphosa urges all of society to work together to end gender-based violence and calls on men who live by positive values to assist other men to mend their conduct and to report instances of abuse and related wrongdoing,” the Presidency said in a statement on Tuesday.
During the Women’s Day event, President Ramaphosa was joined by a host of prominent figures, including Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes, members of the provincial executive, local government leaders, and representatives from community and faith-based organisations. Learners from the region also participated, highlighting the importance of instilling these values in younger generations.
The pledge, which can be signed virtually at https://www.stateofthenation.gov.za/endGBVF, commits men to being allies in the fight against GBVF. It calls for men to maintain positive behaviour and attitudes, take responsibility for their actions, and contribute to creating a safer environment for women. Specifically, the pledge requires men to commit to never raising a hand against a woman, treating women as equals, respecting the rights of women, and relating to women with dignity.
A Nationwide Commitment to Change
President Ramaphosa’s call to action is more than just a symbolic gesture; it is a nationwide commitment to changing the harmful behaviours that contribute to the prevalence of GBVF. By urging men to become part of the solution, the President is addressing the root causes of violence against women and challenging societal norms that perpetuate inequality and abuse.
This initiative is particularly significant as it places responsibility on men to not only change their behaviour but also to hold each other accountable. The President’s message is clear: the fight against GBVF is not solely the responsibility of women or the government; it requires the active participation of every member of society, especially men.
Leadership and Community Support
The involvement of high-profile leaders such as Premier Dr Zamani Saul and Deputy Minister Alvin Botes underscores the government’s commitment to addressing GBVF at all levels. Their participation, along with that of local government officials and community leaders, sends a strong message that GBVF is a national priority that requires collective action.
Community and faith-based organisations have also been instrumental in supporting this initiative. By signing the pledge, these groups demonstrate their dedication to fostering safe, respectful environments for women and girls in their communities. The involvement of learners further emphasises the importance of educating young people about gender equality and respect from an early age.
