President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a significant success, emphasizing broad consensus among world leaders despite some disagreements. The summit, held on November 18-19, 2024, marked a pivotal moment for global dialogue on pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate action.

Consensus Amid Dissent

Despite the Argentine President Javier Milei’s reservations about certain aspects of the summit’s final declaration, President Ramaphosa stressed the productive nature of the discussions. The summit facilitated open dialogues, allowing nations to voice dissent yet still reach a broad consensus on crucial global matters.

Key Outcomes and Future Vision

Under the Brazilian G20 presidency, the summit focused on combating global hunger and poverty, sustainable development, and reforming international governance—themes that resonated with global leaders aiming to address these pressing challenges in a balanced and inclusive manner . The summit concluded with Brazil handing over the G20 presidency to South Africa, setting the stage for the next summit in Johannesburg .

South Africa’s G20 Presidency Goals

Looking ahead to the Johannesburg summit, President Ramaphosa outlined the theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.” He underscored the need to tackle global challenges that disproportionately affect the Global South, such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The upcoming summit aims to foster discussions that lead to tangible actions and enhance global cooperation.

Engagement and Diplomacy

As South Africa prepares to host the G20 summit, President Ramaphosa expressed enthusiasm about working with international leaders, including the United States under President-elect Donald Trump. The South African presidency aims to continue building on the groundwork laid by Brazil, focusing on inclusive and sustainable solutions to global issues.
