President Ramaphosa
Cape Town, Western Cape – President Cyril Ramaphosa has sounded the alarm on what he terms an inequality emergency gripping the world, calling on women leaders to stand firm against threats to their rights and roles in society. Speaking at the International Women’s Forum Cornerstone Conference on Thursday, he stressed the need for urgent action to close growing gaps in wealth, education, and leadership that hit women hardest. With delegates from over 35 countries gathered to share ideas on leading in tough times, Ramaphosa’s words set a strong tone for talks on building a fairer future. As South Africa faces its own battles with gender violence and economic divides, his call highlights the key part women play in driving change at home and abroad.
The conference, running through the week, brings together top minds from business, government, schools, charities, and community groups. It focuses on ways women can shape economies, tech, climate fixes, and world rules.
Ramaphosa Highlights Widening Gaps and Their Impact on Women
The president painted a stark picture of how inequality is getting worse worldwide. “Between 2000 and 2024, one percent of the world’s population captured forty-one percent of all new wealth, while just one percent went to the poorest half of humanity,” he said. He linked this to fewer women finishing higher studies and holding seats in places that make big choices about their lives. “In more unequal societies, fewer women complete higher education, and fewer women are represented in the institutions that make decisions about their lives.”
Ramaphosa noted that gains in gender fairness are under attack from rising old views and money troubles. He urged the group to fight back hard. “This is the moment to push back. This is the moment for women to raise their voices, loudly and clearly,” he added. His speech tied into wider worries, like how poor countries get left behind in global fixes, making life harder for women and girls.
Tackling Gender-Based Violence as a Hidden Crisis
A key part of Ramaphosa’s talk was the ongoing fight against gender-based violence and killings of women, which he called a second big health threat. “Gender-based violence and femicide is the other pandemic we must confront. It remains widespread in many societies, just as COVID-19 once was,” he stated. In South Africa, where thousands of women face harm each year, this hits close to home. He linked it to bigger issues like unfair pay and lack of safe spaces, which keep women from reaching their full strength.
The president pushed for stronger steps to boost women’s money power, like counting unpaid home work, giving better loans, and opening doors to top jobs. These moves, he said, are vital to turn things around and build stronger groups.
The Role of Women Leaders in Global Change
Ramaphosa told the delegates their ideas must go beyond the meeting room. “Your voices must not remain within these walls. They must shape institutions, policies and change. This is our moment to act,” he urged. The conference gives a spot for women from different fields to swap plans and build ties that last.
Talks cover big topics like including more people in economies, using new tech for good, fixing climate harm, and making world rules fairer. With women often leading these changes, the event aims to spark real steps that help everyone.
South Africa hosting this fits with its push for equal rights, like laws against gender harm and plans to get more women in work. But challenges remain, with high job loss for women and slow change in some areas.
