CAPE TOWN – President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to open and address the official opening of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) in the National Council of Provinces chamber in Cape Town. This session is set for Thursday, February 22, 2024.

The ceremony stands as a pivotal moment in South African tradition and governance, acting in compliance with Section 33 (1) (b) of the country’s Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, 2019. The Act recognizes the Khoi-San community and ensures their leaders are integrated into the national system of governance.

“We are gathered here today, not just to uphold a formality but to reaffirm the integral role that traditional and Khoi-San leadership play in the fabric of our nation,” President Ramaphosa is expected to declare as he delivers the keynote address to herald the official opening of the NHTKL.

The event will be graced by a constellation of distinguished guests, including Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Premiers, and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) responsible for Traditional Affairs, all of whom will be joined by Kings and Executive Committee (EXCO) Members from Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders.

The convergence will also bring together delegates from various facets of society such as the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA), Royal Leaders of South Africa (Rolesa), key figures from the Business and Religious Sectors, representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and envoys from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. The National Khoi-San Council, as well as Chapter 9 Institutions, will round out the assembly of eminent attendees.

In the spirit of unity and cooperative governance, this hallmark event not only showcases the rich diversity of South African heritage but also underscores the commitment to a collective future wherein all communities are represented and acknowledged within the democratic framework.

“It is a profound moment for all South Africans, as we come together to recognise the traditional authorities and formal structures that are foundations of our communal lives,” a statement from the presidency outlined the ethos of the occasion.
