President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officially open the Newlyn PX Terminal and the Tetra Pak Manufacturing plant in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, on the 4th of April 2024. This initiative is part of the President’s concerted effort to stimulate investment within the nation.

The presidency articulated its objectives through a recent statement, highlighting the alignment of these developments with overarching economic goals: “These entities made pledges through the South African Investment Conference, an initiative led by President Ramaphosa with an ambitious goal of attracting R1.2 trillion in investments over five years.”

The newly established multi-modal rail terminal in Bayhead, adjacent to Durban’s bustling port, represents a cornerstone of this endeavour. With a R2 billion investment, this expansive project has not only met its initial financial commitments but exceeded them by a staggering R2.6 billion, amounting to a total investment of R4.6 billion. This terminal stands as Africa’s largest multi-modal rail facility, embodying the nation’s stride towards revolutionizing its logistics infrastructure.

Over the past 26 years, the backers of this terminal have not merely shown unwavering dedication but have actively contributed to the transformation of South Africa’s logistical backbone. This development is poised to be a flagship enterprise, substantially augmenting the country’s logistical capabilities and its competitive stance on the global stage. By enhancing the vital NATCOR trade corridor, which connects Johannesburg to Durban’s port, the terminal will streamline the transfer of goods, promoting an efficient shift of cargo transportation from road to rail.

Concurrently, the Tetra Pak Group has made remarkable forays into the manufacturing sector in KwaZulu-Natal, with an investment exceeding R500 million. As a global leader in food processing and packaging, Tetra Pak’s involvement signals a significant advancement towards sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging solutions. The establishment of this facility not only makes it Africa’s premier site for the production of aseptic carton packaging but also underscores a commitment to the circular economy and industrial progress within the region.

Beyond the domestic scope, these investments are timely as South Africa positions itself within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), leveraging these new assets for heightened export capacities.

The agenda for the day illustrates a well-structured programme, beginning with the inauguration of the Newlyn PX Terminal from 10:30 to 12:30, followed by the tour of the Tetra Pak Manufacturing Plant from 14:00 to 16:00.
