President Ramaphosa to Inaugurate Historic South African Shipment under AfCFTA

President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to preside over the official dispatch of the country’s inaugural shipment under the terms of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This pivotal moment is scheduled for Wednesday at the bustling Port of Durban, symbolizing South Africa’s commitment to bolstering intra-African trade.

Aligned with the 13th AfCFTA Council of Ministers meeting, which will convene from 30 – 31 January 2024 at the prestigious Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, this event accentuates the strategic economic integration envisioned by the agreement.

South Africa distinguishes itself as a leader within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) by being the first to activate the protocols of the AfCFTA accord, thereby opening a new chapter in continental commerce.

The AfCFTA, which is hailed as a critical enabler for economic transformation across Africa, aims to create a mammoth single market by eliminating tariffs on 90% of goods and fostering free access to commodities, goods, and services across the continent.

Experts anticipate that the pact will amplify the region’s standing in the global marketplace, promote diversification, scale-up production capabilities, and spur employment and income growth. For South Africans, it signifies an avenue to drive both domestic and continental economic inclusivity.

In next month’s 37th African Union Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, attention will turn to assessing the AfCFTA’s advancement, monitoring milestones, and identifying areas for further development.

Present at the occasion will be key figures such as Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition; KwaZulu-Natal’s Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube; and Wamkele Mene, the AfCFTA Secretary General, alongside other officials including the AfCFTA Council of Ministers. Together, they will witness the shipment of South African products proudly marked for export across Africa.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition conveyed that this historical event represents not only a pioneering step for South African trade but also serves as an instrumental catalyst in nurturing a robust ecosystem of trade across the African continent.

They highlighted that through the execution of this shipment under the AfCFTA’s binding legal framework, South Africa is sending a powerful message about the country’s readiness to expand its trade horizons throughout Africa and beyond.
