President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the South Africa Automotive Week on Thursday, where he will outline the government’s commitment to advancing the automotive sector in the country. Accompanying him will be key ministers, including Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy, Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Minister of Minerals and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe. This event marks a significant moment for South Africa’s automotive industry as leaders gather to discuss the path forward under the theme, “Reimagining the Future, Together: Celebrating 100 Years of Automotive Heritage, Passion, Resilience, and Ingenuity.”
Government’s Role in Automotive Development
The South African government has long been a cornerstone of support for the country’s automotive industry, creating policies that foster growth, innovation, and transformation. As President Ramaphosa noted, “Government has played a pivotal role in fostering a favourable policy and regulatory environment that has supported growth, transformation, and innovation within the automotive industry.”
The South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM 2035) is a central part of this support. The plan aims to increase the nation’s share of global vehicle production to 1% and boost annual automotive export values from R201 billion in 2019 to R400 billion by 2035. This ambitious target reflects the government’s vision of positioning South Africa as a competitive player in the global automotive market.
Importance of Infrastructure and Logistics
The efficient operation of South Africa’s logistics and infrastructure sectors is crucial for maintaining the automotive industry’s competitiveness. High shipping and transportation costs can significantly impact export performance, making it vital for South Africa to streamline these areas. “The effective functioning of the logistics and infrastructure sector is paramount to maintain competitiveness, as expenses associated with shipping and transportation play a vital role to determine the competitiveness of our exports,” stated the Presidency.
The South Africa Automotive Week will serve as a platform to discuss strategies for enhancing logistics efficiency and reducing operational costs. This will be crucial as the country seeks to meet the SAAM 2035 goals and expand its footprint in the international automotive arena.
South Africa Automotive Week: A Premier Thought Leadership Event
Taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), the South Africa Automotive Week is regarded as the continent’s premier automotive industry event. The gathering brings together a wide array of stakeholders, including global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), vehicle component suppliers, international investors, policymakers, and journalists. The event offers a unique opportunity for these industry leaders to engage in discussions on the future of automotive manufacturing, investment trends, and regulatory developments in South Africa.
As the country celebrates a century of automotive heritage, this year’s theme—“Reimagining the Future, Together”—reflects a forward-looking approach that combines tradition with innovation. The event will highlight the resilience and ingenuity that have shaped South Africa’s automotive sector over the past 100 years, while also setting the stage for future growth and transformation.
Key Topics and Expected Announcements
President Ramaphosa is anticipated to emphasise South Africa’s commitment to sustainable automotive growth and investment in green technologies. With the global automotive industry increasingly moving towards electric vehicles (EVs), there is growing interest in how South Africa plans to adapt to this shift. Ministers Parks Tau, Barbara Creecy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Gwede Mantashe are also expected to provide insights into how their respective departments are supporting the industry’s transition to greener, more sustainable practices.
The government’s recent initiatives to boost renewable energy capacity and modernise infrastructure could have significant implications for the automotive sector, particularly as it explores the potential for local EV production. As one of Africa’s leading automotive markets, South Africa is poised to play a key role in the continent’s transition to sustainable mobility.
The Future of Automotive Exports
With the SAAM 2035 targeting a significant increase in export value, South Africa is actively positioning itself as an automotive export hub. This initiative is not only aimed at enhancing economic growth but also at creating jobs and supporting local industries. The government’s investment in logistics, infrastructure, and regulatory support aims to streamline export processes and attract international investors.
South Africa’s geographic location and existing trade agreements provide it with a strategic advantage in accessing markets across Africa, Europe, and beyond. By enhancing its export capabilities, South Africa could significantly contribute to global automotive supply chains, particularly in sectors like EV components and advanced manufacturing.
