President Ramaphosa to Deliver Eulogy at Funeral of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi

In a press briefing held at the Union Buildings on Thursday, Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will be delivering the eulogy at the special official funeral of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The funeral is set to take place in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Prince Buthelezi, a respected figure in South Africa, sadly passed away on September 9, 2023, at the age of 95. In recognition of his extraordinary distinction, President Ramaphosa has declared his funeral a special official funeral category 1, in accordance with the government’s funeral policy.

Magwenya explained the significance of this category, stating, “A special official funeral category 1 is a recognition reserved for individuals of extraordinary distinction as designated by the President of the Republic of South Africa.” This designation highlights the immense impact that Prince Buthelezi has had on the nation.

The funeral proceedings will also include elements of military honours, as directed by President Ramaphosa. In a show of national respect, flags will be flown at half-mast at flag stations across the country until the evening of Saturday, the day of the funeral.

President Ramaphosa’s eulogy at the special official funeral will undoubtedly pay tribute to the life and contributions of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a figure who has left an indelible mark on South Africa.
