President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) commitment to overcoming South Africa’s myriad challenges. Despite the ideological differences within the coalition, Ramaphosa’s message was one of unity and collective effort, signalling a strong stance against the naysayers.
President Ramaphosa’s Address to Parliament
Delivering his response to the debate on the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) on Monday, President Ramaphosa highlighted the Government of National Unity’s resolve to move past political differences for the common good of South Africa.
“We are now a Government of National Unity, formed in the cause of rebuilding our nation. We are committed to putting our differences aside and working together for the common good,” he asserted.
A Call for Unity
Ramaphosa emphasized the unity demonstrated by GNU members during the debate, showcasing their commitment to advancing South Africa’s interests. With 62 million South Africans relying on their success, he assured that despite the opposition’s lack of support, the GNU would prevail.
“As Minister [Pieter] Groenewald has said, we have before us an opportunity to restore and build. So let us use this opportunity. In the challenging and difficult times, we live; this unity will be our comfort, the unity that we are forging our courage, and it will be our greatest strength,” he stated.
Acknowledging a New Era
Reflecting on the May 29 vote results, Ramaphosa noted a significant shift in South African politics, ushering in a new era of hope and optimism. He underscored the importance of demonstrating a genuine government of national unity, beyond mere convenience.
“Much of what has been said during this debate has confirmed that we have entered a new era in South African politics. It is an era of hope. It is an era of optimism for the people of our country and for its future,” Ramaphosa remarked.
Addressing South Africa’s Challenges
The President was candid about the challenges facing South Africa but refuted the notion that the country is in a hopeless situation. He acknowledged the country’s progress over the past three decades, despite setbacks and shortcomings.
“We are very much alive to the challenges we still face as a country. And yet we must remind ourselves that South Africa is not in the hopeless situation that some in the opposition benches want us to believe,” Ramaphosa said.
The Medium-Term Development Plan
Ramaphosa reiterated the importance of the Medium-Term Development Plan 2024-2029, which aims to guide South Africa’s progress over the next administration. He emphasized the necessity for leaders to work together towards a common goal of improving the quality of life for all South Africans.
Commitment to Shared Prosperity
In his address, Ramaphosa underscored the GNU’s determination to accelerate efforts towards development and shared prosperity. He called for collaboration and cooperation, inviting those who share the vision of a better South Africa to join in the effort.
“We need the builders, not the breakers or destroyers. We need weavers and not vultures. Those who share this vision of a better South Africa will find the doors of the Government of National Unity always open to cooperation and collaboration,” Ramaphosa declared.
