President Ramaphosa
South Africa is in mourning following the tragic death of Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, the country’s ambassador to France, who passed away in Paris at the age of 58. President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sadness over the loss, describing it as a moment of profound grief for the nation. Mthethwa, a veteran politician and diplomat, was found dead outside a high-rise hotel in the French capital, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding his untimely passing. This event has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles and highlighted Mthethwa’s significant contributions to South Africa’s political and international landscape.
Tragic Circumstances Surrounding the Ambassador’s Death
Ambassador Mthethwa was discovered deceased at the base of the Hyatt Regency hotel, a towering structure located in the Porte Maillot area on the western edge of Paris. Reports indicate that he had booked a room on the 22nd floor, where a window was found forced open, raising questions about the nature of the incident. His wife had reported him missing to the authorities the day before, after receiving a concerning text message from him. French police and the Paris prosecutor’s office have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause, treating it as a potential suicide but withholding further details pending the probe.
The ambassador had been in Paris fulfilling his diplomatic duties when the tragedy occurred. South African officials have confirmed the reports and are working closely with French authorities to repatriate his remains and support his family during this difficult time. The incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences from both South African and international communities, underscoring the sudden and traumatic nature of his death.
President Ramaphosa’s Condolences and Tribute
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, President Cyril Ramaphosa conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and colleagues. “President Cyril Ramaphosa is saddened by the passing of Ambassador Emmanuel Nkosinathi ‘Nathi’ Mthethwa, South Africa’s Head of Mission in Paris, who has died in tragic circumstances in the French capital at the age of 58,” the statement read.
The President extended his deep condolences to Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife, Ms Philisiwe Buthelezi, and the Ambassador’s extended family. He also offered sympathies to the Ministry and Department of International Relations and Cooperation, particularly the officials at the South African Embassy in Paris.
Ramaphosa highlighted Mthethwa’s recent diplomatic achievements, noting his role in strengthening ties between South Africa and France. “The President’s thoughts are also with the extensive network of partners and stakeholders, including the French Presidency and Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, with whom Ambassador Mthethwa had established strong relationships since his diplomatic appointment in December 2023.”
In his personal tribute, the President said: “The untimely passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa is a moment of deep grief in which Government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family. Ambassador Mthethwa has served our nation in diverse capacities during a lifetime that has ended prematurely and traumatically. In his last tenure of service he has facilitated the deepening of relations between South Africa and the Republic of France, which has produced benefits for individuals and businesses in both countries and advanced our cooperation in the global arena. May his soul rest in peace.”
A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa’s life was one of dedicated service to South Africa, spanning decades of political involvement and public duty. Born in 1967, he began his activism at the young age of 15, joining youth organisations opposed to the apartheid regime. He later became part of the underground structures of the African National Congress (ANC), which was banned at the time, risking his life in the fight for freedom and democracy.
Following the end of apartheid in 1994, Mthethwa rose through the ranks of the ANC, serving on its national executive committee and holding key positions in government. He served in Cabinet for 15 years, first as Minister of Police, where he oversaw law enforcement reforms and initiatives to combat crime. Later, he took on the portfolio of Minister of Arts and Culture from 2014 to 2019, expanding it to include Sports from 2019 to 2023. During this time, he championed programmes to promote cultural heritage, support artists, and develop sports infrastructure across the country.
Mthethwa also played a pivotal role on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee, contributing to the successful hosting of the global event that put South Africa on the international map. His appointment as ambassador to France in December 2023 marked a new chapter, where he focused on enhancing bilateral relations. Under his leadership, cooperation grew in areas such as trade, education, and cultural exchanges, benefiting businesses and citizens in both nations.
Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola paid tribute to Mthethwa’s legacy, stating: “I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community.” Lamola emphasised Mthethwa’s unwavering patriotism and his contributions to South Africa’s foreign policy objectives.
