President Cyril Ramaphosa, as Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), expresses his profound sadness at the tragic death of six soldiers who perished in a devastating fire.
The incident occurred at the SA Army Combat Training Centre at the Lohatla military base during a military exercise named Vukuhlome.
On Saturday, 07 October, the South African National Defence Force made an announcement regarding a wildfire that initially started in Khathu, within the Gamagara local municipality. Tragically, the fire spread to the military base, claiming the lives of six soldiers and causing injuries to three others.
Additionally, the army suffered significant losses in terms of equipment, including vehicles.
President Ramaphosa extends his deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased SANDF members.
“The President wishes the injured SANDF members a speedy and comfortable recovery and his thoughts are with survivors who witnessed this tragedy.“ said Presidency in a Statement
