South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, expressed deep sadness and offered heartfelt condolences on the passing of Maggie Mathabatha, a well-respected figure and a champion for social change. Mathabatha, the wife of Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha, had dedicated her life to improving education and empowering women in the country.
Mrs Mathabatha passed away on Wednesday, 28 June, following a short illness.
The news of Mathabatha’s passing has shocked and saddened the nation, as she was widely admired for her tireless efforts in driving positive change. Ramaphosa, who had the privilege of working closely with Mathabatha on several initiatives, described her as an inspirational woman who played a crucial role in transforming communities.
Mathabatha’s legacy will forever be remembered through her work with various organizations, where she focused on empowering women and creating equal opportunities. She strongly believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and gender inequality. Through her efforts, she had successfully established numerous educational programs that helped young girls and women pursue their dreams and aspirations.
President Ramaphosa, in his tribute, highlighted the impact Mathabatha had on the lives of countless individuals. Her dedication and unwavering commitment to uplifting society have left an indelible mark on the nation. He expressed his gratitude for the immense contributions she made and acknowledged her as an influential force in the fight against social injustices.
President Ramaphosa said: “My thoughts and those of the National Executive as well as the nation are with Premier Mathabatha, his family, and the administration of Limpopo in this moment of loss.
“As a community-focused leader, Maggie Mathabatha dedicated herself to the development and dignity of the people of Limpopo through housing opportunities, food security and support to people with disabilities.
“Her involvement with communities was a valued and exemplary complement to the work of Government led by the Premier and the Provincial Executive.
“We join the people of Limpopo in this hour of mourning and in our shared prayer that the soul of Maggie Mathabatha will rest in peace.”
