“The 27th of April 1994 was a victory for non-racialism, for non-sexism, for human dignity and progress. Not just in South Africa, but everywhere. It was a victory for reconciliation.” - President Ramaphosa #FreedomDay2024 #Freedom30

President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the transformative journey South Africa has embarked on since the dawn of democracy in 1994. Speaking ahead of the 2024 Freedom Day national celebrations, Ramaphosa recounted the arduous path from the oppressive eras of colonialism and apartheid to today’s thriving democratic state.

“Three centuries of systematic oppression couldn’t extinguish the spirit of our people,” the President told a diverse audience gathered to commemorate the historic moment when, 30 years ago, South Africans of all races united to cast their votes in the first democratic elections. “That day marked the beginning of a new era where freedom, dignity, and equality became the cornerstones of our society,” he reflected.

Drawing attention to the significant achievements since 1994, Ramaphosa underscored the government’s relentless efforts in uplifting the lives of millions. “Our steady march towards equality before the law, the introduction of democratic institutions, and the removal of apartheid’s racist laws have set us on a path of restoration and dignity,” he stated.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to improving quality of life, Ramaphosa detailed the substantial progress in providing basic services to the community. “We’ve not only erected bridges and laid roads, but we’ve also illuminated countless homes, ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, fundamental elements of a dignified life,” he proudly announced.

Confronting challenges, Ramaphosa acknowledged the hurdles that still loom large, particularly unemployment. However, he pointed to the economy’s growth and the doubling of the employment rate as indicators of resilience and progress. Empowerment initiatives and labour laws have revolutionized workplaces, propelling black South Africans and workers into ownership and senior roles, he added.

Education and healthcare have seen vast improvements, with initiatives targeting matriculation and tertiary education making strides towards inclusivity and accessibility. “Our children’s future is brighter now, with no-fee schools and comprehensive support for students from less privileged backgrounds,” Ramaphosa noted.

In a society once riven by inequality, today’s South Africa stands as a beacon of hope and equality, the President remarked, heralding the strides made towards gender equality and the rights of the LGBTQI+ community. He celebrated the significant female representation in government and public service, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to dismantle the barriers faced by persons with disabilities.

Reflecting on the broader impacts of democracy, Ramaphosa highlighted land reform and infrastructure development as pillars of the nation’s progress. “The foundations laid by the voters in 1994 have not only enhanced our international standing but have opened doors for global cooperation benefiting all South Africans,” he remarked.

The event drew various dignitaries, activists, and artists, including the revered musicians Yvonne Chaka Chaka and PJ Powers, alongside Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi. Attendees were treated to a performance by Grammy Award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo, encapsulating the day’s festivities with a spirit of unity and celebration.
