Ramaphosa Officially Launches Home Affairs Offices in Mokopane
President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially opened the doors to the new Home Affairs offices in Mokopane, Limpopo, and introduced an innovative approach to service delivery aimed at making these services more accessible, especially to South Africa’s rural inhabitants.
During the launch, President Ramaphosa unveiled the “Home Affairs on Wheels” initiative – mobile offices set to make the Department of Home Affairs’ services faster, cheaper, and more convenient for all South Africans. “This programme is going to change the provision of Home Affairs services for the better across South Africa,” declared Ramaphosa, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving service efficiency while cutting down on the costs and travel time for citizens.
The initiative comes as a response to the challenges faced by many, particularly those in rural areas, who find accessing government services costly and time-consuming. With the introduction of kiosk models for essential services such as applying for replacement copies of birth, marriage, or death certificates, and even passports or smart ID cards, the government hopes to alleviate these burdens. These kiosks, likened to ATMs for Home Affairs services, promise a new era of convenience and accessibility.
Another significant development highlighted by the President is the establishment of Home Affairs offices within hospitals for immediate birth registrations – a move that has already shown promising results in enhancing the rate of civil registrations.
From partnerships with banks and shopping malls to the 412 Home Affairs offices across the country, the government is making concerted efforts to bring services closer to the people. The expansion to mobile offices signifies yet another stride towards inclusivity and accessibility.
In his address, President Ramaphosa also took the opportunity to remind the audience of the significant journey South Africa has embarked on since 1994. “With the advent of democracy, we set out on the path to restore the dignity of all South Africans,” he said, reflecting on the importance of the Department of Home Affairs in safeguarding citizens’ rights and enabling them to lead dignified lives.
As 2024 marks 30 years of freedom for South Africa, President Ramaphosa’s message is clear: the government remains committed to ensuring every South African has easy access to essential services, thereby empowering them to exercise their rights and freedoms.
Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, echoed the President’s sentiments, urging communities to actively participate in preserving these mobile units. “These are for you. They are there to serve you,” he highlighted, reinforcing the collective responsibility towards this national asset.
Residents from Limpopo have warmly welcomed this initiative, expressing relief and satisfaction at having Home Affairs services within closer reach. Rethabile Masunke and Thabo Rabotho from Mahwelereng shared their excitement about the convenience and cost-saving benefits the new office and mobile units offer.
