By Thabo Mosia
President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Brazil on 16 November 2024 to lead South Africa’s delegation at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” is scheduled for 18 and 19 November 2024.
South Africa’s Role in the G20
The G20, comprising 19 countries and the European Union, represents 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population. It serves as a platform for major economies to collaborate on global economic stability and sustainable growth. South Africa’s participation is guided by four strategic foreign policy pillars: advancing national interests, enhancing the African agenda, promoting South-South cooperation, and influencing global multilateral architecture through North-South dialogue.
Brazil’s G20 Presidency and Priorities
Under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s G20 presidency has focused on social inclusion, combating hunger and poverty, facilitating energy transitions, promoting sustainable development, and reforming global governance institutions. These priorities align with the broader objectives of the Global South, emphasizing equitable growth and environmental sustainability.
President Ramaphosa’s Agenda at the Summit
On 17 November 2024, President Ramaphosa is set to participate in the launch of the “Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg” campaign, highlighting South Africa’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.
During the summit’s plenary sessions on 18 November 2024, he will address critical issues:
• Combating Hunger and Poverty: Emphasizing strategies to alleviate poverty and ensure food security, reflecting South Africa’s dedication to social welfare and economic equity.
• Reforming Global Governance: Advocating for reforms in international institutions to better represent developing nations and promote a more balanced global order.
Transition of G20 Presidency to South Africa
A significant milestone at this summit is the official handover of the G20 presidency to South Africa. Starting 1 December 2024, South Africa will lead the G20 under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability,” aiming to consolidate initiatives from previous Global South presidencies and address pressing global challenges.
Bilateral Engagements and Delegation
On the sidelines of the summit, President Ramaphosa plans to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to strengthen diplomatic ties and discuss mutual interests. He is accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola and Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, underscoring the importance of cohesive leadership in international engagements.
South Africa’s Vision for the G20 Presidency
As South Africa prepares to assume the G20 presidency, its vision focuses on:
• Advancing National Interests: Leveraging the G20 platform to achieve domestic objectives, including economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement.
• Enhancing the African Agenda: Promoting sustainable development across the African continent, addressing issues such as infrastructure development, healthcare, and education.
• Promoting South-South Cooperation: Strengthening partnerships among developing countries to share knowledge, resources, and best practices.
• Influencing Global Multilateral Architecture: Advocating for a more equitable international order that reflects the interests and aspirations of developing nations.
