President Ramaphosa Extends SARS Commissioner Kieswetter’s Term by Two Years

President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved an extension of Edward Kieswetter’s tenure as the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The announcement, made this Tuesday, has settled the air of anticipation surrounding the leadership of the revenue service. This extension ensures that Commissioner Kieswetter will head SARS for a further two years beyond his initial term, which was set to expire in May 2024.

“The decision follows the agreement between the President and Kieswetter to extend the tenure of the Commissioner to enable an orderly leadership transition in the organisation,” said a statement from the Presidency. This move appears to be part of a broader strategy to maintain continuity and performance within SARS, an institution that has seen its fair share of upheavals in past years.

Under Edward Kieswetter’s stewardship since his appointment in March 2019, SARS has experienced a turnaround phase following several controversies that undermined its integrity and efficacy in the preceding years. His term, determined by President Ramaphosa upon Kieswetter’s initial appointment, was aligned with Section 6 of the South African Revenue Service Act and was supposed to culminate in 2024 after five years of service beginning from 1 May 2019.

The Presidency has also noted that “Kieswetter will continue leading the execution of the current strategic direction of the revenue service while ensuring a smooth leadership transition.” Such a move has garnered support, as it is deemed essential for SARS to continue its recovery trajectory and bolster South Africa’s fiscal strength.
