President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his congratulations to President Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Pezeshkian secured a decisive victory, clinching 53% of the votes in a closely watched election process.

The Iranian elections, held over two rounds on 28 June and 5 July 2024, saw a significant turnout, reflecting the democratic will of the Iranian people. President Ramaphosa lauded their commitment to democracy, demonstrating South Africa’s strong ties with Iran.

“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, President Ramaphosa also congratulates the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on exercising their democratic right during the two rounds of the electoral process,” the Presidency announced.

The warm congratulatory message was further amplified by President Ramaphosa’s best wishes for President Pezeshkian’s health and success. “President Ramaphosa wishes President Pezeshkian good health, fortitude, strength and success for his tenure as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” added the statement.

South Africa and Iran share a rich history of diplomatic relations, established in 1994. Over the years, these ties have grown stronger, encompassing various spheres of cooperation.

“President Ramaphosa affirms that South Africa will continue working with the Islamic Republic of Iran to deepen cooperation at the bilateral and multilateral levels. The aim is to promote global and regional peace, security, stability, and to achieve economic development for the benefit of both countries,” highlighted the Presidency.
