In a heartfelt address to the families affected by the recent building collapse in George, Western Cape, President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed unwavering government support to ease the anguish of the bereaved and injured. During his visit to the disaster site on Thursday, the President emphasised his deep commitment to standing by those impacted, underscoring the government’s role in providing solace during this challenging time.

“We do not want to increase the burden, the suffering, and the grief that you are going through. We want to be there as government at all levels to demonstrate our compassion,” Ramaphosa stated, extending a hand of solid support and reassurance.

The tragedy, which occurred last Monday, saw a partially constructed building give way with 81 workers reported to have been on site. According to the latest update provided by the George Municipality at midday on Thursday, the incident has so far resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals. Out of the 81 workers, 62 have been accounted for, with 12 hospitalised and 19 still missing.

In a gesture of commitment to thorough investigation and support, President Ramaphosa was briefed during his visit by various officials, including ministers and Western Cape Premier Allan Winde. The brief focused on the ongoing efforts in responding to the disaster and the extensive support being marshalled for the affected families.

The President praised the level of professionalism and dedication demonstrated by all those involved in managing the aftermath of the tragedy. “South Africa is capable of dealing with disasters, especially of this magnitude, and we will see this through to the end,” he asserted, promising relentless pursuit of accountability and the eventual emergence of truth regarding the incident.

Acknowledging the urgent need for answers and closure among the grieving families, Ramaphosa stressed the government’s commitment to transparency throughout the ongoing investigation process. “We are a transparent government. We are able to reveal everything as it should be revealed. Let us have a level of patience,” he appealed to the families, acknowledging the profound difficulty of their wait for answers.

In addition to his promises of support and accountability, the President also conveyed his deepest condolences to families mourning their loved ones. He further wished a swift recovery for those receiving treatment in hospitals. “We are currently focusing on saving lives, caring for the injured, and ensuring the dignified handling of the remains of the deceased,” Ramaphosa elaborated on government efforts to address the immediate needs of those affected.
