President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the release of preliminary results for the general elections held in Mozambique on October 9, 2024. Congratulating President-Elect Daniel Chapo and the ruling FRELIMO party, Ramaphosa also called for peace and justice amidst reports of post-election violence.
Ramaphosa expressed his support for Mozambique’s recent general elections, acknowledging the National Electoral Commission (CNE) for its efforts in conducting a “professional” election process. Preliminary results indicate a victory for Daniel Chapo, the candidate from FRELIMO, Mozambique’s ruling party. Ramaphosa praised Mozambique’s voter turnout, particularly the participation of women, who accounted for 53% of the electorate. He emphasized the importance of these elections, noting they occurred 32 years after the General Peace Agreement, which ended Mozambique’s civil war and ushered in multi-party democracy .
However, Ramaphosa also voiced concerns over the unrest following the election announcement. Protests erupted as supporters of opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, representing the Podemos party, alleged widespread electoral fraud. Mondlane, who claimed he had won the vote, accused FRELIMO of manipulating the process. Reports indicated that opposition supporters engaged in demonstrations, blocked roads, and burned tyres. In response, police used tear gas, leading to dozens of injuries and hundreds of arrests .
The post-election violence has claimed lives, including opposition figures close to Mondlane. President Ramaphosa offered his condolences to the families of those who died and urged Mozambique’s law enforcement to expedite investigations and hold the perpetrators accountable. He called for restraint and encouraged all parties to resolve disputes through legal channels, reinforcing South Africa’s commitment to maintaining stability in Mozambique .
Observers have raised concerns over the transparency of the election process, with opposition leaders demanding a recount in some districts and alleging interference by FRELIMO supporters. Claims have also surfaced that Zimbabwean citizens, with alleged backing from Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party, illegally voted in Mozambique’s elections to support Chapo, further fueling tensions .
As Mozambique’s Constitutional Council prepares to validate the final results, Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s solidarity with Mozambique, advocating for peace and continued cooperation. He expressed hope that Mozambique would overcome these challenges and unlock its development potential through stable governance and strong international relations .
