President Ramaphosa Commends South Africa’s Progress in Advancing Access to Education

President Cyril Ramaphosa praised South Africa’s progress in advancing access to education for previously marginalized groups as the nation prepares to mark 30 years of democracy. In his weekly newsletter to the nation, President Ramaphosa highlighted the significant gains made in the education sector since the end of the apartheid regime.

Referencing the results of Census 2022, the President noted that three-quarters of young people between the ages of five and 24 are now attending school, with the percentage of adults aged 20 and older who have completed secondary education doubling since the first democratic Census in 1996.

President Ramaphosa credited much of this progress to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, which has played a vital role in supporting access to higher education. He also acknowledged the challenges facing the education system as it works to meet the needs of a growing population, but emphasized the significant strides made in expanding access to education over the past three decades.

Additionally, President Ramaphosa highlighted the achievements of female students, noting that in 2022, more than half of the successful matriculants were female. He also pointed out the increasing number of women studying at tertiary institutions, particularly in fields that were once male-dominated.

As South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy, President Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the country’s matriculants, wishing them luck as they await their results. He urged the nation not to lose sight of the progress made in the education sector, emphasizing the importance of continuing to build on these gains in the quest to leave no one behind.

As the class of 2021 will be expected to sit for the National Senior Certificate examination, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he is proud of the nearly 900 000 candidates and this is an important marker for the future of our nation.
