President Ramaphosa Celebrates South African Athletes’ Success at 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games

President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa honoured South Africa’s 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games medalists at a celebratory ceremony held at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. The event, which highlighted the athletes’ achievements and the transformative power of sport, brought together medal winners, their families, sponsors, and other dignitaries.

“This is a moment of great pride for our nation. It is a moment to express our gratitude to those who have represented our nation with such distinction on the world’s greatest stage. Today, we are not just celebrating medals and the star athletes who won them,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President underlined the significance of the moment, noting that the athletes’ victories represent more than individual triumphs; they symbolise South Africa’s collective resilience, unity, and the power of sport to inspire and uplift.

A Celebration of National Unity and Perseverance

President Ramaphosa reflected on South Africa’s history in international sports, from exclusion during apartheid to reclaiming its rightful place on the global stage at the 1992 Olympics. He described the 2024 Paris Games as a continuation of that legacy, celebrating the pursuit of equality, justice, and national unity.

“This is a celebration of South Africa’s spirit, the unifying power of sport, its ability to inspire, and its reminder of the strength when united as a nation,” the President said.

South Africa’s athletes brought home an impressive total of 12 medals from the Games: six from the Olympics (one gold, three silver, and two bronze) and six from the Paralympics (two gold and four bronze).

Honouring Excellence: The Shield of Jove

A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the prestigious Shield of Jove to swimmer Tatjana Smith and Paralympic athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo for their exceptional performances.

The Shield of Jove, donated to South Africa by British archaeologist Frederick Mitchell-Hedges in 1948, symbolises excellence, perseverance, and the pursuit of greatness.

“This year, we are proud to award the Shield of Jove to Tatjana Smith and Mpumelelo Mhlongo, in recognition of their exceptional achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games,” the President said.

These awards served as a testament to the athletes’ dedication and highlighted South Africa’s investment in sports infrastructure and grassroots development.

Investing in the Future of South African Sport

While celebrating the present achievements, President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of preparing for the future by expanding youth development programmes, particularly in underserved rural communities.

“We must continue to invest in youth development, ensuring that children in every part of our country – whether urban or rural – have access to sports programmes,” he said.

The President called for strengthened partnerships between local schools, community centres, and clubs to ensure that young athletes are equipped with the skills, coaching, and facilities needed to reach their full potential.

Acknowledging the Support Network

In addition to recognising the athletes, the President paid tribute to the coaches, trainers, families, and sponsors, including the National Lotteries Commission and corporate partners, who played vital roles in Team South Africa’s success.

“We are a nation forged in struggle, in adversity and in hope. To the Olympic and Paralympic champions with us here today, we say thank you. We are a nation that stands united, proud and ready for the challenges of the future,” he said.

A Legacy of Sporting Excellence

President Ramaphosa concluded by affirming the importance of sport in fostering national pride and unity, describing it as a powerful tool for inspiring future generations.

“Together, we will continue to build a legacy of sporting excellence. A legacy that will inspire many generations to come,” the President said.
