President Cyril Ramaphosa On Court Ruling On Gaza War
JOHANNESBURG, – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa lauded the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) recent decision regarding allegations of genocide in Gaza perpetrated by Israeli forces.
In a proclamation, the UN’s highest legal authority called on Israel to take immediate measures to halt actions that could be deemed genocidal and to actively help the suffering Palestinian civilians amidst ongoing conflicts with Hamas militants.
In what is considered a milestone verdict, the ICJ concluded that there was a “plausible” basis to the accusations that Israel’s conduct in the Gaza Strip could amount to violations of the Genocide Convention. President Ramaphosa emphatically voiced his support during a national broadcast, hailing the judgment as vindication for South Africa’s long-standing views. “We have named the attacks on Gaza genocidal; actions for which Israel should and must answer. The International Court of Justice now echoes this sentiment,” he declared on Friday.
The recent Gaza war, unfolding since October of the previous year, has taken a devastating toll with over 25,000 lives lost – a stark majority being women and children. Ramaphosa referenced a grim label from UNICEF, calling Gaza a “graveyard for thousands of children.” This establishes the gravity of the situation and underscores the importance of the ICJ ruling in the President’s view.
Echoing the principles heralded by Nelson Mandela in South Africa’s transition to democracy, President Ramaphosa reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to justice and peace for all. In December of the last year, South Africa sought the ICJ’s intervention under the Genocide Convention, challenging Israel’s acts in Gaza. The country implored the court for provisional measures to safeguard the rights of Palestinians under said convention.
The ICJ’s President, Judge Joan Donoghue, delivering a unanimous verdict, indicated immediate measures were necessary to preserve the rights in question until a final decision is reached. Furthermore, she insisted that Israel, by virtue of the Genocide Convention, undertake effective steps to prevent any acts defined by Article II of the convention, which catalog genocidal acts beyond just killing, encompassing infliction of harm and severe livelihood impairments designed to eliminate a group.
President Ramaphosa advocated for an escalation of efforts towards a ceasefire and the initiation of dialogues for a sustainable two-state resolution, to permit Israel and Palestine independent co-existence. He expressed gratitude towards the global solidarity with South Africa’s application and to the legal teams and ministers involved in the pursuit of this case.
In closing, he conveyed a strong desire that the ICJ’s order would herald the cessation of the ongoing crisis and the beginning of reconciliation and a fair, enduring peace.
