“The 27th of April 1994 was a victory for non-racialism, for non-sexism, for human dignity and progress. Not just in South Africa, but everywhere. It was a victory for reconciliation.” - President Ramaphosa #FreedomDay2024 #Freedom30

President Cyril Ramaphosa and newly elected British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between South Africa and the United Kingdom. The call, which took place on Sunday morning, was a clear indication of the shared vision between the two leaders.

Shared Vision for South Africa and the UK

Prime Minister Starmer, who assumed office on Friday, 5 July 2024, reached out to President Ramaphosa to discuss various areas of mutual interest, including the just energy transition. Highlighting his eagerness to “work closely with South Africa as part of executing the strong mandate given to the Labour Party in the general election on Thursday, 4 July 2024”, Starmer showcased his dedication to global partnerships and sustainable development.

Presidential Congratulatory Note

President Ramaphosa extended his heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Starmer on his electoral success. Reflecting on the shared objectives outlined in South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) Statement of Intent, Ramaphosa mentioned that numerous aspirations are aligned between both administrations.

Continuing Dialogue and Historical Context

This discussion is seen as a continuation of dialogues initiated in November 2022, during President Ramaphosa’s state visit to London. This visit was notably the first state visit hosted by His Majesty King Charles III, during which Sir Keir Starmer was serving as the leader of the opposition Labour Party.

Elevating Bilateral Relations

“President Ramaphosa described the bilateral relationship as a special bond and said South Africa wished to see greater alignment with the UK at the national and multilateral level,” stated the Presidency. Furthermore, with South Africa set to preside over the G20 in 2025, Ramaphosa highlighted this as an invaluable opportunity for collaboration.

“President Ramaphosa foresees closer cooperation with [the] UK in the political, social, people-to-people, diplomatic, trade and investment and climate change domains,” added the Presidency.
