President-Elect John Mahama
By Thabo Mosia
President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has nominated Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to continue serving as the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. This decision, announced on 5 January 2025, follows extensive consultations with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Official Statement and Rationale
A statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President-Elect, emphasized Bagbin’s distinguished parliamentary career and his pivotal role in steering the 8th Parliament. The statement read: “Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament, rising from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority Leader, and subsequently serving as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.”
The President-Elect expressed confidence that under Bagbin’s stewardship, the 9th Parliament would be further strengthened to effectively execute its oversight responsibilities, especially during this critical period in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development.
Alban Bagbin’s Parliamentary Legacy
Alban Bagbin’s parliamentary journey is marked by significant milestones. Serving as the Member of Parliament for Nadowli West for multiple terms, he held positions as both Minority and Majority Leader, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of Ghana’s legislative processes. His tenure as Speaker of the 8th Parliament was characterized by efforts to promote Ghanaian and African cultural heritage, notably through his symbolic dress code, which became a hallmark of his leadership.
Support from the Upper West Region
The nomination has been met with widespread approval, particularly from the Upper West Region. The Chiefs and people of the region had previously appealed to President-Elect Mahama to retain Bagbin as Speaker, citing his exceptional leadership, courage in adversity, and transformational approach to governance. They highlighted his ability to maintain legislative balance in a historically hung Parliament and his efforts to promote cultural heritage.
Implications for the 9th Parliament
With the NDC securing a strong majority in Parliament, Bagbin’s reappointment is seen as a strategic move to build on progress and address the nation’s challenges. His experience and leadership are expected to foster unity and inclusivity, aligning with President-Elect Mahama’s campaign promise to “reset Ghana.” The continuity in parliamentary leadership is anticipated to facilitate the effective implementation of legislative agendas and strengthen the Parliament’s role in governance.
