President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to building a united and prosperous South Africa. His re-election, a clear testament to his leadership, has set a tone of hope and inclusivity for the nation.

Humble Acceptance and a Call for Unity

In his acceptance speech on Friday, Ramaphosa expressed deep gratitude and humility. “It is with pleasure that I accept [the re-election]. It will once again be a privilege and pleasure to serve this great nation in the position of President. I wish to thank all leaders for their congratulatory messages. Your messages are a clear clarion call for working together,” he said.

Ramaphosa’s re-election took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) during the first sitting of the National Assembly of the seventh administration. Prior to his election, Ramaphosa was sworn in as a Member of the National Assembly, a position he relinquished upon being elected President.

Constitutional Requirements and Upcoming Inauguration

As stipulated in the South African Constitution, Ramaphosa must assume office within five days of his election by taking an oath of office. This crucial ceremony will take place on 19 June 2024 in Pretoria, marking the formal commencement of his term.

Addressing the House after securing 283 out of 339 votes, Ramaphosa highlighted the era of hope and inclusivity that lies ahead. “Through their vote, our people expect all parties to work together within the framework of our Constitution, and to work as political parties to achieve the objectives of a democratic society,” he noted.

Navigating Post-Election Realities

Acknowledging the reality of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections results, where no single party secured an outright majority, Ramaphosa emphasized the necessity for cooperation among political parties. He underscored the importance of working collectively to overcome challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Ramaphosa urged political parties in Parliament to cooperate to foster national unity, transforming the government into a voluntary coalition that works towards shared national objectives.
