President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposal to elevate China’s diplomatic ties with African nations to the level of strategic relations. This announcement was made during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit held in Beijing in September 2024, marking a significant advancement in the longstanding China-Africa partnership.

President Xi highlighted that China-Africa relations should now be characterised as an “all-weather China-Africa community,” with a shared future for the new era. This strategic vision seeks to deepen cooperation in key areas such as economic development, infrastructure, trade, and digital technology .

During his address, President Ramaphosa reiterated Africa’s commitment to building stronger linkages between countries within the continent, while also enhancing collaboration with China. He emphasized that the future should be people-centred and inclusive, with a focus on development and sustainability. Ramaphosa also praised China’s contribution to Africa’s development, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative, which aims to integrate African economies through cross-border projects .

FOCAC has been instrumental in deepening Africa-China relations since its inception in 2000, and Ramaphosa noted that this latest summit reflected a shared desire for modernization, development, and progress across Africa. He stressed that FOCAC can play a pivotal role in achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which outlines Africa’s long-term vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development .

As the world faces numerous challenges, including climate change, geopolitical rivalry over critical minerals, and growing instability due to conflicts, the cooperation between Africa and China remains crucial. Ramaphosa highlighted that while Africa is often most affected by these global issues, the continent also presents unique opportunities for shared prosperity .

This new phase in China-Africa relations underscores the growing influence of both regions on the global stage, as they collaborate on addressing global issues and fostering economic growth. The elevation of ties is expected to enhance cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, digital economy, and human resource development .
