President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to embark on a State Visit to the People’s Republic of China from 2-5 September 2024. This visit aims to bolster diplomatic and trade relations between the two nations, building on the momentum from President Xi Jinping’s State Visit to South Africa in August 2023.

Bilateral Trade Relations:
China remains South Africa’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at US$34 billion in 2023. South Africa’s exports amounted to US$12 billion, while imports from China stood at US$22 billion. The State Visit is expected to further solidify these ties, with a focus on enhancing market access and addressing the trade balance. Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, highlighted that China is also the largest source of foreign direct investment in South Africa, significantly contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Key Agreements and Cooperation:
During the visit, several key agreements are anticipated, including a Framework Agreement on Development Cooperation. Additionally, a South African delegation will participate in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) from 4-6 September 2024. FOCAC is a crucial platform under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at fostering multilateral coordination and boosting infrastructure development across Africa.

China-Africa Relations:
China and Africa share a unique relationship founded on mutual trust and a commitment to shared prosperity. The upcoming FOCAC summit will further explore opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as health, trade, digital innovation, and green development. The summit is also expected to align with broader initiatives like the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and South Africa’s National Development Plan 2030, which seek to promote sustainable development and economic growth across the continent.
