President Cyril Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to sign into law two pivotal bills: the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Bill, and the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill. This significant event will take place at the iconic Union Buildings on Friday.

Advancing Women’s Safety and Security
According to the Presidency, the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill represents a “critical step forward in ensuring the safety and security of women from all walks of life”. The bill underscores the government’s commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV), a pressing issue that affects millions of South Africans.
“The establishment of a council dedicated to drive a whole-of-society approach to combat this scourge is fundamental,” the Presidency stated. The new council will function as a statutory body, responsible for providing strategic leadership in the fight to eliminate GBV and femicide. This council’s creation is anticipated to bring a coordinated and focused effort towards eradicating these heinous crimes, thus improving the safety and security of women across the nation.
Strengthening the Fight Against Corruption
Concurrent with the GBVF Bill, the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill lays the groundwork for the establishment of the Investigative Directorate against Corruption. This new legislation is a leap towards strengthening South Africa’s fight against corruption, particularly in high-profile cases involving serious criminal or unlawful conduct.
“The Directorate, which will over time incorporate the existing Investigating Directorate, will have investigative capacity with priority given to particularly serious criminal or unlawful conduct committed in serious, high-profile or complex corruption, commercial or financial crime,” the Presidency announced. The bill further mandates that the Directorate be furnished with the necessary infrastructure and resources to effectively carry out its duties.
A Dual Approach to Justice
These legislative measures symbolize a dual approach to justice in South Africa, tackling both gender-based violence and corruption head-on. The National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill is expected to inject renewed vigour into the existing investigative framework, while the GBVF Bill fortifies the nation’s resolve to ensure a safer environment for women.
The synergy of these two legislative actions will likely have a positive ripple effect on the country’s socio-economic landscape. President Ramaphosa’s endorsement of these bills in a formal ceremony at the Union Buildings underscores the gravity and urgency of these issues.
Public and Political Reactions
The public and political response to these upcoming legislative endorsements has been overwhelmingly supportive. Advocacy groups and civil society have long called for more robust measures to address GBV and corruption, and these bills are seen as a victorious stride forward.
South Africans are hopeful that the new council and directorate will function with efficiency and transparency, ensuring that the laws are not only enacted but implemented effectively.
