President Cyril Ramaphosa to Pay Respects in Namibia Following Death of President Hage Geingob

JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa will travel to Windhoek on Saturday, 10 February 2024, on a Working Visit to express his condolences over the death of Namibian President Hage Gottfried Geingob. The Namibian leader passed away on the 4th of February after a battle with cancer, leaving a notable void in the Southern African political landscape.

“President Geingob was not only a counterpart but also a dear friend, and his passing is felt profoundly by the people of South Africa,” President Ramaphosa stated in an official communique. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to our Namibian brothers and sisters during this time of grieving.”

President Ramaphosa praised the late president’s commitment to fostering a strong and collaborative relationship between the two nations. In 2023, the mutual respect and warmth between the leaders were visible during state visits to South Africa in April and again to Namibia in October for the co-chairing of the Third Session of the South Africa-Namibia Bi-National Commission.

The South African president further commiserated with Namibia’s First Lady, Madame Monica Geingos, as well as President Nangolo Mbumba, who is expected to carry on the presidential responsibilities following President Geingob’s death. He also recognized the loss felt within the Cabinet and the leadership of Namibia’s ruling SWAPO Party.

“His Excellency President Geingob’s legacy of dedication to his nation and his role in the broader scope of African leadership will not be forgotten,” said President Ramaphosa during a press briefing. “Our nations share not only borders but also a history and aspirations for prosperity and peace in our region.”
