President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to lead the national Women’s Day commemoration tomorrow, hosted by the Khâi-Ma Municipality in Pofadder, Namakwa District, Northern Cape. The President will address the event at the Denis Nel Stadium under the theme: “Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom Towards Women’s Development”.

Honouring a Historic March

This commemoration marks 68 years since 20,000 women from diverse backgrounds marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956. They protested against the extension of Pass Laws to women and presented a petition opposing the carrying of passes. This historic march remains one of the largest demonstrations in South Africa’s history, challenging the notion that “a woman’s place is in the kitchen” and declaring it to be everywhere.

Reflecting on Women’s Contributions

National Women’s Day, celebrated annually since 1994, serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by women to society and a time to reflect on advancements in women’s rights. Over 30 years of democracy, South Africa has made notable strides in promoting gender equality across all domains, including the economic empowerment of women.

The Women’s Charter plays a vital role in advancing women’s economic programmes through targeted reforms aimed at driving equality.

Inclusive Celebrations

Women’s Day 2024 is the first national day led by the Government of National Unity (GNU) and is being celebrated in a rural community. This underscores the commitment to include all South Africans in national events and to highlight the achievements and needs of women across the country.

Government Services and Women Entrepreneurs

President Ramaphosa will tour a “services-on-wheels” exhibition, showcasing government services available to citizens attending the national day. Additionally, a trade expo featuring small, medium, and micro enterprises led by women entrepreneurs in the Northern Cape will be part of the event.
