Justice Yvonne Mokgoro
CAPE TOWN – President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy at the funeral of the late retired Constitutional Court Justice, Yvonne Mokgoro. The esteemed legal pioneer will be laid to rest following a Special Official Funeral Category 1 ceremony on Thursday, 23 May 2024. Justice Mokgoro passed away earlier this month at the age of 73.
A Trailblazer in South African Law
Yvonne Mokgoro was born in Galeshewe, Kimberley, in the Northern Cape. She was a pioneering figure in South African law, achieving several academic milestones before becoming the first black female justice of the Constitutional Court in 1994.
- Education: She obtained her Bachelor of Law (B.luris), Bachelor of Law (LLB), and Masters of Law (LLM) degrees from the University of Bophuthatswana, now known as North West University.
- Apex Court: Mokgoro served 15 years at the apex court, significantly influencing the legal framework of the new South Africa.
“Justice Mokgoro, during her legal career, taught a number of law courses at universities in South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom,” the Presidency stated.
Global Influence and Recognition
Justice Mokgoro was not only a fixture in South African law but also held notable international positions. She was associated with various respected organisations including:
- The International Women’s Association (Washington DC)
- The International Association of Women Judges
- The International Federation of Women Lawyers
- The South African Women Lawyers Association
In 2006, she was honoured as an icon in the history of Women Lawyers in South Africa.
Special Official Funeral Category 1
Special Official Funerals Category 1 in South Africa are distinguished by ceremonial elements provided by the South African National Defence Force. On Saturday, the Presidency outlined some features of this honour:
“President Ramaphosa has declared that the national flag be flown at half-mast at all flag stations around the country from tomorrow morning, Sunday, 19 May 2024, until the evening of the funeral on Thursday, 23 May 2024,” stated the Presidency.
