Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa is set to co-chair the China-Africa Leaders Round Table alongside President Xi Jinping of China later today.
This comes after the recently concluded 15th BRICS Summit. The theme for the roundtable discussion is “Promoting African Integration and Jointly Building a High-Level Africa-China Community with a Shared Future.”
The initiative to hold the roundtable was made by the Government of China, with the aim of fostering stronger ties and collaboration between China and Africa.
This event will see the participation of the current chairs of the eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of Africa, including the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Chair of the African Union, and the Chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
The focus of the dialogue will be on Chinese political commitment to regional and continental integration, with a specific emphasis on supporting Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. Various challenges facing different regions in Africa will also be addressed, allowing the Chinese Head of State and Government to explore ways in which China can further support regional economic growth.
President Ramaphosa will play a crucial role in steering the political discussions during the roundtable. His goal is to convey key messages on African development to the Chinese authorities, recognizing China as a significant player in advancing Africa’s growth and development.
In his role as co-chair, President Ramaphosa will highlight the importance of China-South Africa bilateral relations in supporting the African Agenda. He will also link the outcomes of the recently concluded BRICS Summit to the discussions of the roundtable, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration. Furthermore, he will underscore the significance of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) as the principal multilateral engagement between Africa and China and advocate for joint monitoring and evaluation to support the implementation of Agenda 2063.
Another crucial aspect of President Ramaphosa’s address will be the transformative nature of infrastructural development in Africa. He will stress the importance of China’s support for infrastructure projects like the North-South Corridor projects of the Presidential Infrastructure Championing Initiative, and call for greater Chinese cooperation in the operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
President Ramaphosa will also advocate for greater cooperation in international affairs and the reform of multilateral institutions. He will emphasize the need to uphold the UN-based global system and UN Security Council Reform as crucial elements in achieving overall African development.
At the conclusion of the China-Africa Leaders Round Table, participating heads of state and government are expected to adopt a Joint Statement. This statement will serve as a tangible outcome of the discussions and further strengthen the relationship between China and Africa.
