President Cyril Ramaphosa will grace Athlone Stadium in Cape Town today as the venue hosts the much-anticipated Football for Humanity match, featuring the Palestinian national team against a South African side. The event carries an important message of “Peace, Hope, and Solidarity,” shining a light on the Palestinian plight through the universal language of sport.

Organized under the patronage of the presidency, the international showpiece aims to provide Palestinian players an opportunity to showcase their talent within an atmosphere of tranquility and amidst top-notch sporting infrastructure. The initiative is an embodiment of South Africa’s persistent support for the Palestinian people’s struggle for self-determination and opposition to the Israeli occupation.

“The Football for Humanity event will showcase the Palestine National Football Team in two exhibition matches on Sunday, 11 February, and Sunday, 18 February, at the iconic Athlone Stadium,” announced the presidency.

The event is especially meaningful, coinciding with a significant date in South African history – the anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990. His liberation was a pivotal moment in the country’s struggle against apartheid, paving the way for South Africa’s freedom.

“The second match, also to be held at Athlone Stadium, will feature a South African Invitational XI facing off against the Palestinian visitors in the Freedom Cup,” said the presidency. The matches are set against the backdrop of the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s own freedom and its firm stance in international advocacy for the Palestinian cause.

The Palestine National Football Team, freshly arriving from their commendable performance in the Asia Cup where they reached the Round of 16, will bring hope and heightened competition to the field upon their arrival in Cape Town. Awaiting them is a South African side, guided by the wisdom and tactical prowess of football luminaries Mr. Boebie Solomons, Dr. Jomo Sono, and Mr. Farouk Khan.

“The Palestinian National Football Team, fresh from their historic achievement in the Asia Cup where they qualified for the Round of 16 for the first time, touched down in Cape Town on Thursday, 08 February 2024,” notified the presidency.

The anticipation is not just limited to the hosts, as the Palestine Football Association has voiced excitement about their involvement in the matches, recognizing the emphasis on humanitarian values and the potential to further peace objectives.

“The Football for Humanity match is poised to be a fitting display of the power of sport to promote peace and unity,” reinforced the presidency, mirroring the ideology of the late Nelson Mandela, who famously articulated sport’s profound capacity to bridge divides.

As all eyes turn to Athlone Stadium today and again on the 18th of February, the soccer matches transcend mere exhibition events. They encapsulate the ethos of cultural exchange, collaboration, and a unified stance against oppression – ideals resonating far beyond the field of play.

For those looking to witness this emblematic engagement, the details of the event are as follows:
Date: Sunday, 11 February 2024
