Johannesburg, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to attend a milestone event at BMW’s Rosslyn Plant in Tshwane, Gauteng, on 11 October 2024, marking the start of production for the next generation X3 plug-in hybrid vehicle. The event underscores BMW’s significant investment in South Africa’s automotive industry, further solidifying the country’s position as a global manufacturing hub for the company.

During a recent media briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that this event follows BMW’s commitment during the 2023 South Africa Investment Conference, where the company announced an R4.2 billion investment in its Rosslyn operations. This investment was aimed at equipping the plant to manufacture the new generation of X3 hybrid vehicles, a move that aligns with South Africa’s drive toward cleaner, greener industries and job creation.

Magwenya emphasized President Ramaphosa’s satisfaction with BMW’s long-standing presence in South Africa, which spans over five decades. BMW has played a vital role in the country’s automotive industry, contributing significantly to industrial output and export earnings. The plant in Rosslyn, one of the company’s key global production hubs, will exclusively produce the X3 plug-in hybrid model for international markets, positioning South Africa as a leader in hybrid vehicle production.

In his remarks, Magwenya highlighted the broader economic impact of BMW’s operations in the country, noting that the company’s activities have created approximately 95,000 direct and indirect jobs. This aligns with the South African government’s policy objectives of fostering industrial transformation, boosting exports, and ensuring long-term sustainability. BMW’s R4.2 billion investment is also seen as a crucial step toward achieving President Ramaphosa’s R2 trillion investment target for South Africa’s industrial sectors.

The event is not only a celebration of technological advancement but also a testament to South Africa’s industrial policy achievements. President Ramaphosa is expected to tour the state-of-the-art facility during the event and engage with BMW executives on the future of green technology and automotive innovation in the country. The President is also expected to address the workforce, acknowledging their contribution to making South Africa a competitive player in the global automotive industry.

The shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles comes at a critical time as South Africa looks to diversify its automotive sector, reduce carbon emissions, and meet global environmental standards. The government’s push for increased production of hybrid vehicles aligns with the broader climate action goals that include transitioning to greener industries while creating sustainable jobs. BMW’s commitment to these goals through this investment demonstrates a shared vision with the government, which is expected to benefit South Africa’s economy in the long run.

President Ramaphosa has previously highlighted the automotive sector as a key area for economic growth and transformation. By embracing new technologies and fostering global partnerships, South Africa can position itself as a leader in automotive innovation, particularly in green technologies. BMW’s new X3 plug-in hybrid production is a vital step in that direction.

As the country prepares for this landmark event, it is clear that BMW’s investment will have a lasting impact on South Africa’s economy, workforce, and global standing in the automotive sector. With the support of the government, this initiative marks another step forward in the nation’s journey towards industrial transformation and sustainable development.

The BMW start of production event will not only celebrate the new hybrid vehicle but will also highlight the collaborative efforts between BMW and the South African government to drive innovation, create jobs, and ensure the country remains competitive in the global automotive industry.

The success of this initiative, alongside other investments in the green economy, signals a positive trajectory for South Africa’s future as it works to attract more foreign direct investment and foster a sustainable, technologically advanced industrial base
