President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the opening session of Parliament on 18 July 2024. This announcement was made by the Presidency on Friday, emphasising the importance of this event in outlining the priorities of the 7th Administration.
The President has convened a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in line with Section 84(2)(d) of the South African Constitution of 1996, read in conjunction with Rule 13(1)(a) of the Joint Rules of Parliament.
Significance of 18 July – Nelson Mandela International Day
The President’s address will coincide with Nelson Mandela International Day, a day declared by the United Nations to honour the legacy of the founding President of democratic South Africa. This day, which marks Mandela’s birthday, serves as a global reminder of the values and principles he championed, calling on individuals and communities worldwide to engage in personal and collective actions for the greater good.
“The Opening of Parliament on Nelson Mandela International Day is a fitting tribute,” stated the Presidency. “It calls on individuals and communities to reflect on Mandela’s values and make a positive impact both locally and globally.”
