President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce the new Cabinet this evening at 9pm. This highly anticipated announcement will be broadcasted live on national television and streamed on central news social media platforms.
Following his inauguration on 19 June 2024, and his election by the National Assembly on 14 June, this marks the commencement of the 7th Democratic Administration. According to The Presidency, “The new National Executive will constitute the 7th Democratic Administration as a Government of National Unity comprising a diversity of political parties as an outcome of the national and provincial elections held on Wednesday, 29 May 2024.”
EFF’s Stance on Government of National Unity
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have expressed readiness to co-govern with the ruling African National Congress (ANC), which could bring a shift in political dynamics. The EFF has strongly urged the ANC to reject any alliance with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus).
In a recent statement, the EFF reiterated their dedication to the principles of the Freedom Charter. This was followed by a letter to ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, where EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini detailed the party’s conditions for co-governance, stressing their commitment to the liberation struggle’s objectives.
Key Proposals in EFF’s Statement
- Commitment to Liberation: Acknowledging the ANC’s pivotal role in South Africa’s liberation, the EFF promises to support building a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society.
- Rejection of DA and FF Plus: Firm opposition to the DA and FF Plus is central, with the EFF accusing them of an “imperialist, counter-revolutionary, white supremacist agenda.”
- New Agreement: The EFF proposes a unique pact with the ANC focusing on principles of liberation and equality.
- Ensuring No Collaboration with DA: Assurance is given that the EFF will not engage with the DA in any governmental capacity.
- Government Participation: The EFF seeks broad representation in all national government clusters and leadership positions in legislatures.
Background on Government of National Unity Talks
The Government of National Unity (GNU) talks have seen participation from multiple parties. However, the negotiations have encountered tensions, particularly between the ANC and DA. IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged swift resolution to these discussions, warning of potential delays in governance.
Contentious points in the talks have included the allocation of cabinet portfolios. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticised the DA for their shifting demands, while DA leader John Steenhuisen insists on proportional representation reflective of electoral outcomes.
SADTU, representing a significant sector within the angle of education, has voiced strong opposition to the DA’s potential role in the Basic Education Ministry, currently headed by Angie Motshekga since 2009. SADTU argues that the DA’s demands to lead education are politically motivated and could undermine the union’s efforts.

As speculation grows, a leaked document circulating on social media suggests the DA’s expected ministerial appointments:
